The playground in Aktivitetsskoven is a central part of KlimaByen in Middelfart and demonstrates how rainwater can become a resource when climate adaptation is integrated with the development of green urban spaces.

Here, climate adaptation is actively used to create unique public spaces and give the city a distinctive character.

When it rains, Aktivitetsskoven transforms into a lush landscape resembling a delta. Water flows through the area where several small streams merge into a larger brook and small lakes. Rainwater from Skovkvarteret is collected here and can seep into the ground during heavy downpours. Between the lakes and streams are open clearings that invite play, ball games, and movement. There are three different clearings: one for the youngest children, an athletics area for the local school, and a ball field with space for football, handball, basketball, and other activities.

The forest also offers a wide variety of play and activity equipment, including a parkour bridge, a bridge with a climbing net, as well as paths and tracks for cycling and running. Regardless of age, it is hard not to be drawn into play and movement in Aktivitetsskoven, located just ten minutes from the city’s life and traffic as a green oasis.

KlimaByen in Middelfart is Denmark’s largest demonstration project for urban development through climate adaptation. Although rainwater is mostly invisible, the solutions are designed with multiple functions. They not only manage water but also make everyday life greener, healthier, and more experiential for citizens.
