Railway Ferry Service – Strib

From 1866 to 1935, Strib was a vital part of the railway connection between Copenhagen and Hamburg (Altona).

Ferries operated between Strib and Fredericia, and from 1872 these were railway ferries. They could carry freight wagons and passengers, but not cars. During this period the railway system expanded, and Strib’s station facilities and ferry harbour grew. Strib became an important transport hub, especially in the 1930s when both freight volumes and passenger numbers reached record levels.

In 1935, the route was expected to serve close to one million passengers passing through Strib that year. However, this never happened. The old Lillebæltsbro was inaugurated in 1935, making the railway link between Strib and Fredericia unnecessary. Little remains from that time today, but the Vejlby-Strib Local Historical Archive has placed scannable codes with links to videos that share the story of the railway ferries.
