Where the sea hides a landscape shaped by ice

From the coast at Middelfart, the Lillebælt looks calm, but beneath the surface lies a landscape shaped by an Ice Age glacier: deep channels, steep slopes and hills that continue far below the water. The belt is in fact among the deepest Danish waters, reaching depths of up to 80 metres, while elsewhere it winds narrowly between the coastlines.

Naturpark Lillebælt is one of Denmark’s largest nature parks, stretching from Funen to Jutland with Middelfart as a central part. Here you’ll find a marine nature park where sea, coastlines and forests are inseparably connected. The strong current keeps the seabed free of loose sediment, creating habitats for plant and animal life that few other places in the country can match.

The harbour porpoise

The Lillebælt is also home to one of the world’s densest populations of harbour porpoises. The small whale lives here year-round and is most often seen from April to September. If you go on a whale safari from Middelfart, there’s a good chance of spotting a dorsal fin break the surface. From the coast, you can also keep watch yourself, especially when the water lies still.

Explore the nature park

Along the shore, beech forests alternate with steep cliffs and coastal meadows. In autumn, you can hunt for fossils at Røjle Klint, where the sea regularly exposes ancient layers of clay and chalky marl. If you’re more drawn to water than land, the Lillebælt offers sailing, kayaking and other water sports, while hiking trails along the coast give views across the entire belt.

Naturpark Lillebælt runs ongoing tours and activities for both locals and visitors, including coastal walks, porpoise trips, fossil hunts and mushroom walks. This makes the nature park a place you can return to year after year and experience in new ways depending on the season and weather.
