Torpedo Station Strib

During the Second World War, garages and lookout bunkers lay hidden in the slope at Strib Nordenbro in north-west Funen. The site shows how German coastal defence was meant to protect Lillebælt (the Little Belt).

History on Lillebælt

The torpedo station at Strib Nordenbro was part of the German coastal defence in the Second World War. The garages sat inside the slope, and smaller bunkers above kept watch on the traffic in Lillebælt. The torpedoes were moved along concrete tracks into the water. From there, the Germans steered them by cable towards a target in the belt.

The installation never properly came into use. Apart from a few exercises, the stations were not used, and after the occupation they were all blown up. Today a reconstructed torpedo garage stands on the site, and you can still walk on the original concrete tracks.

The torpedo station lies on the north coast of Strib, close to Strib Lighthouse. Park at Nordenbro at the end of Vestergade and walk down to the beach. From here you can follow the coast along Lillebælt to Søborg Voldsted and back through Strib. The loop is about 3.5 km. It is a place for you if you like standing where history happened.
