Knight Ranke rides again
“Ride ride Ranke fra Båring til Blanke”
The children's rhyme about the giant Ranke has echoed here for centuries. He's said to be buried somewhere between Båring and the beach. Locals tell how he abducted a young maiden and did to her what was worse than death itself. Therefore he's condemned to ride for all eternity. When it storms, he rides through the night.
Today Båring Vig lies still. The sandy bottom shines brightly through the surface. You can walk far out and still feel the sand beneath your feet. Blanke Mole, established by the state for coastal fishermen in 1909, provides shelter from westerly winds.
Inland, the sculpture trail winds through Asperup. 300 meters where art and nature meet. Works by Frede Troelsen, Per Ung and others stand among the trees. Light falls through the branches. From here it's a short walk to Båring Strand, where Ranke's land meets the water.
Tip: Walk the sculpture trail in Asperup and continue to Båring Strand. The walk takes 1-2 hours and shows the area's quiet distinctiveness – and if darkness has fallen and it's storming, listen for hoofbeats.
